Lying in the Red Mountain northwest of Lhasa, Potala Palace was originally built to marry Princess Wencheng by the Tibetan King Songsten Gampo. After the reconstruction in the 17th century, it becomes the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas, and the political center of Tibet. Since the 5th Dalai Lama, all of the important religious and political activities have been held at the Potala Palace. Meanwhile, it is also the place where the Dalai Lamas' funerary stupas and sacrificial halls are located.
