Norbulingka, the present People's Park of Lhasa, was originally built in 1740s by the 7th Dalai Lama, and then served as the traditional summer residence of the successive Dalai Lamas. Through over 200 years' extension, it now covers an area of 360,000 square meters (89 acres), having a total of 374 rooms. As its name implies, Norbulingka meaning Treasure Park in Tibetan is he largest and most beautiful man-made garden, with the most relics in Lhasa.
